Glitter cones are easy to use, and a few small habits make a big difference to your results. Here are Glittercone‘s best tips for neat lines, smooth flow and cones that last longer.
Cutting the tip
- Always start with a tiny cut. A small opening gives fine lines and better control.
- Cut straight across, not at an angle, for an even flow.
- For borders and bold designs, cut a little more only after testing.
Getting smooth lines
- Knead the cone gently between your fingers before use to mix the paste evenly.
- Hold the cone slightly above the surface and let the paste fall onto the line rather than dragging the tip.
- Keep steady pressure; stopping and starting causes blobs.
- Practise on scrap paper before working on your final piece.
Drying
- Keep your project flat while it dries so the lines don’t run.
- Drying time depends on how thick the lines are and the weather. Thicker lines and humid days need longer.
- Avoid touching, folding or stacking pieces until the glitter is completely dry.
- Don’t use a hair dryer on high heat, as it can make the paste bubble.
Storage
- Seal the tip with a pin, clip or tape after every use.
- Store cones in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
- Keep them lying flat or tip-up in a box so the paste does not settle at the tip.
- Keep out of reach of small children.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Cutting the tip too big: lines become thick and uneven.
- Working on a dusty or oily surface: glitter won’t stick well.
- Layering on wet glitter: colours mix and smudge.
- Ironing directly on glitter: always iron fabric from the reverse side.
