Lippan art is a traditional mud and mirror craft from Kutch, Gujarat. Today it is one of the most loved DIY home decor trends in India. Adding glitter outlines makes the mirrors shine even brighter. In this tutorial, Glittercone shows you how to make a simple Lippan panel and finish it with glitter cones.
Materials
- MDF board or round wooden base
- Clay (air-dry clay or a mix of clay and fevicol, as commonly used for Lippan)
- Small mirrors in round, diamond and triangle shapes
- Acrylic paint for the background
- Glittercone glitter cones in gold, silver or bright colours
- Pencil, scale and compass
Steps
- Paint the base in a solid colour such as maroon, black or blue, and let it dry.
- Draw the pattern with pencil: a central circle, petals and borders work well for beginners.
- Roll thin clay coils and press them along the pencil lines.
- Fix the mirrors into the spaces between the clay lines while the clay is still soft.
- Let the clay dry completely.
- Paint the clay white or in a contrasting colour if you like.
- Add glitter outlines. Use your glitter cone to trace around each mirror and along the clay borders. Add small dots for a finished look.
- Dry flat before hanging.
Glitter colour combinations that work
- Black base + white clay + gold glitter: elegant and classic
- Maroon base + gold clay + silver glitter: festive and rich
- Blue base + white clay + multicolour glitter: bright and playful
Tips
- Use a fine tip for the space around mirrors; cut wider for borders.
- Wipe any glitter that touches the mirror surface while it is still wet.
- Lippan panels with glitter make wonderful housewarming and Diwali gifts.
