What Is a Glitter Cone? A Complete Beginner’s Guide

Glittercone glitter paste cones, 20 g each

If you have seen sparkling borders on a Lippan art panel or shiny outlines on a hand-painted dupatta, there is a good chance they were made with a glitter cone. In this guide from Glittercone, we explain what a glitter cone is, what it is used for and how to use it, even if you have never tried one before.

What is a glitter cone?

A glitter cone is a small, cone-shaped pouch filled with liquid glitter paste, a gel-based medium mixed with fine glitter particles. It works much like a mehndi cone: you snip the tip and squeeze gently to draw lines, dots and patterns. When the paste dries, it leaves a raised, sparkling design.

Glitter cone vs glitter powder

Loose glitter powder needs glue, gets everywhere and is hard to control. A glitter cone combines glitter and binder in one, so you get clean lines with far less mess. That is why glitter cones are popular with crafters, art teachers and small businesses who make decorative items.

Where are glitter cones used?

  • Lippan (mud and mirror) art
  • Outlining fabric paintings on sarees, dupattas and kurtis
  • Greeting cards, scrapbooks and invitations
  • Diya, kalash and pooja thali decoration
  • Rangoli boards, torans and wall hangings
  • Resin art, canvas art and school projects

How to use a glitter cone: step by step

  1. Prepare your surface. Make sure it is clean, dry and free of dust or oil.
  2. Sketch your design. Draw a light pencil outline so you know where to go.
  3. Cut the tip. Snip a very small opening first. You can always cut more for thicker lines.
  4. Practise on paper. Do a few test lines to get a feel for the flow.
  5. Squeeze gently and evenly. Hold the cone like a pen and move at a steady speed.
  6. Let it dry completely. Keep the piece flat and undisturbed until the paste is fully dry.

Tips for beginners

  • Keep a tissue handy to wipe the tip and avoid blobs.
  • Work from top to bottom (or left to right if you are right-handed) so you don’t smudge wet lines.
  • Close the tip with a pin or tape between uses so the paste does not dry inside.
  • Layer colours only after the first layer is dry.
